Hey friends!  Do you know, what is CAT Exam? CAT can be abbreviated as Common Admission Test. It means, it is one of the high rated toughest competitive exams in India. The main theme to start up CAT is to select students for their Business administration programs such as MBA, PGPEM, EPGPM, PGPBM, PGP-Mumbai, PGPPM, PGPWE, PGPSM, PGDHRM, PGP-ABM, PGP, PGPEX PGDM and PGP-UAE. The IIM, Bangalore came up with the great news regarding new academic year of 2016 to 2017 is, they going to release their notification on 31st July 2016 (Sunday). Know the History of CAT

Nowadays, CAT exam was conducted on computer based online test. On 1 May 2009, it was announced that CAT would be a Computer Based Test starting from 2009. Before 2009, CAT was a paper based test conducted on a single day for all candidates. The American firm Prometric was entrusted with the responsibility of conducting the test. The first computer based CAT was marred with technical snags. The issue was so serious that it prompted the Government of India to seek a report from the convenor. The trouble was diagnosed as ‘Conficker’ and W32 Nimda, the two viruses that attacked the system display of the test, causing severe slow down. CAT 2015 was conducted by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). At present, there are 20 IIM’s and other top B- schools.

Know your Eligibility

The candidates must be graduated with 50 percent or equal CGPA score. Incorporated with state and central government, the candidates comes under SC or ST or PWD need to hold atleast 45 Percent from recognized board.

The Candidates who appearing final exams of graduation and those who waiting for graduation results can also enroll yourself as eligible.

Reservation details

To claim the reservation, the candidates must type their details and also have to mention all supporting document details along with it. This can be claimed only before registration. After the registration the candidates cannot avail the chance of reservation or cannot change the categories. As per government laws, the reservation can be assigned as,

SC- 15% , ST – 7.5%, OBC under non creamy layer – 27% and PWD – 3%.

Application Fee

The candidates will be asked to pay the application fee only through online mode and that is too via official site. The online payment can be made either using debit or credit or net banking. The fee can be refunded at any cost. So be careful, while making payment. CAT Exam application voucher will be available at Axis bank and its branches too. Thus the registration fee bulleted below,

  • Rs.1600 for General and OBC – NC candidates.
  • Rs. 800 for SC or ST or PWD.

CAT Score – Multi use

The test is conducted every year by one of the IIMs based on a policy of rotation. In August 2011, it was announced that Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) would also use the CAT scores, instead of the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET), to select students for their management programmes starting with the 2012-14 batch. Thus this exam score will act as multiple use to enter any academic sections.

Selection Process

It won’t end up only with written exam like other competitive exams. The admission can be done based on score took in CAT exams of written exam, Group discussion and Personal Interview. The selection not only based on performance of the candidate, but also they will consider academic background, academic performance, working background and other similar inputs of the candidates.

Question Pattern

The question paper will be taken on the basis of Quantitative Ability (QA), Verbal Ability (VA) and Reading Comprehension (RC), Data Interpretation (DI) and Logical Reasoning (LR) in three sections. The single paper of CAT exam’s time duration is 180 mins.

QA – 34 questions

VA and RC – 34 questions

DI and LR – 32 questions

The paper consists of both objective and descriptive papers. No negative marking for descriptive papers.The candidates cannot switch between the sections and have to attend the test in a particular order. The order of the sections is-

  • VRC
  • DI & LR, and
  • QA

Types of Score

There are two types of scores involved: a raw score and a scaled score. The raw score is calculated for each section based on the number of questions one answered correctly, incorrectly, or left unattempted. Candidates are given +3 points for each correct answer and -1 point for each incorrect answer. No points are given for questions that are not answered. The raw scores are then adjusted through a process called equating. Equated raw scores are then placed on a common scale or metric to ensure appropriate interpretation of the scores. This process is called scaling.

Totally, four scaled scores for each candidate, an overall scaled score and three separate scaled scores for each section.

Note: We may expect CAT Exam Registration Process could begin 10 days after the release of notification. The board may change the pattern or slight change in syllabus, because they usually make changes once in two years. However, you may come to know all the details in few hours or days.
