ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICES

Passive Voice For All Tenses Rules

The places of subject and object in sentence are inter-changed in passive voice. 3rd form of verb (past participle) will be used only (as main verb) in passive voice. Auxiliary verbs for each tense are give below in the table.

Present Simple Tense (Passive Voice)

Auxiliary verb in Passive Voice : am/is/are

Active Voice Passive Voice
He sings a song. A song is sung by him.
He does not sing a song. A song is not sung by him.
Does he sing a song? Is a song sung by him?
Present Continuous Tense (Passive Voice)

Auxiliary verb in passive voice : am being/is being/are being

I am writing a letter A letter is being written by me.
I am not writing a letter. A letter is not being written by me.
Am I writing a letter? Is a letter being written by me?
Present Perfect Tense (Passive Voice)

Auxiliary verb in passive voice : has been/have been

She has finished his work He work has been finished by her.
She has not finished her work. Her work has not been finished by her.
Has she finished her work? Has her work been finished by her?
Past Simple Tense (Passive Voice)

Auxiliary verb in passive voice : was/were

I killed a snake A snake was killed by me.
I did not kill a snake. A snake was not killed by me.
Did I kill a snake? Was a snake killed by me?
Past Continuous Tense (Passive Voice)

Auxiliary verb in passive voice : was being/were being

He was driving a car. A car was being driven by him.
He was not driving a car. A car was not being driven by him.
Was he driving a car? Was a car being driven by him?
Past Perfect Tense (Passive Voice)

Auxiliary verb in passive voice : had been

The had completed the assignment. The assignment had been completed by them.
The had not completed the assignment. The assignment had not been completed by them.
Had they completed the assignment? Had the assignment been completed by them?
Future Simple Tense (Passive Voice)

Auxiliary verb in passive voice : will be

She will buy a car. A car will be bought by her.
She will not buy a car. A car will not be bought by her.
Will she buy a car? Will a car be bought by her?
Future Perfect Tense (Passive Voice)

Auxiliary verb in passive voice : will have been

You will have started the job. The job will have been stared by you?
You will have not started the job. The job will not have been stared by you.
Will you have stared the job? Will the job have been started by you?
Note : The following tenses cannot be changed into Passive Voice.

Change Active into Passive Voice

1. Ms Sullivan teaches us grammar We are taught grammar by Ms Sullivan.
2. The teacher praised him. He was praised by the teacher.
3. The firemen took the injured to the hospital. The injured were taken to the hospital by the firemen.
4. An earthquake destroyed the town. The town was destroyed by an earthquake.
5. The boy’s work pleased the teacher. The teacher was pleased with the boy’s work.
6. The fire damaged the building. The building was damaged by the fire.
7. Who taught you French? By whom were you taught French?
8. The manager will give you a ticket. You will be given a ticket by the manager.
9. Spectators thronged the streets. The streets were thronged with spectators.
10. Everyone will blame us. We will be blamed by everyone.
11. The wind blew down the trees. The trees were blown down by the wind.
12. The police caught the thieves. The thieves were caught by the police.
13. Alice posted the letter. The letter was posted by Alice.
14. The hostess received us. We were received by the hostess.
15. They/somebody killed the snake with a stick. The snake was killed with a stick.
16. The people welcomed the minister. The minister was welcomed by the people.
17. They found him guilty of murder. He was found guilty of murder.
18. John Mathews built this house in 1991. This house was built by John Mathews in 1991.

Complete the following sentences using appropriate active or passive verb forms. Choose your answers from the given options.

Verbs like allow, advise, permit and forbid can be followed by either an-ing form or an infinitive. These sentences can be changed into the passive, but the structures are different.

Change the following sentences into passive voice

1. The principal has forbidden smoking on the campus. Smoking has been forbidden on the campus.
2. The principal ha forbidden students to smoke on the campus. Students have been forbitten to smoke on the campus.
3. I advise consulting a good doctor. Consulting a good doctor is advised.
4. I advise you to consult a good doctor. You are advised to consult a good doctor.
5. They don’t allow parking in front of their gate. Parking in front of their gate is not allowed.
6. They don’t allow people to park in front of their gate. People are not allowed to park in front of their gate.
7. We advise early booking. Early booking is advised.
8. We advise passengers to book their tickets early. Passengers are advised to book their tickets early.
9. They made her repeat the whole story. She was made to repeat the whole story.
10. We don’t advise pregnant women to go on a diet. Pregnant women are not advised to go on a diet.
11. I did not beat her. She was not beaten by me.
12. I will never forget this experience. This experience will never be forgotten by me.
13. Mother made a cake yesterday. A cake was made by mother yesterday.
14. The boy teased the girl. The girl was teased by the boy.
15. Did she do her duty? Was her duty done by her?
16. The tiger was chasing the deer. The deer was being chased by the tiger.
17. She has written a novel. A novel has been written by her.
18. She has learned her lessons. Her lessons have been learned by her.
19. Have you finished the report? Has the report been finished by you?
20. The police have caught the thief. The thief has been caught by the police.
21. My brother has completed the work. The work has been completed by my brother.
22. Somebody stole my pen yesterday. My pen was stolen by somebody yesterday.
23. Our team may win the match. The match may be won by our team.
24. Nurse look after patients. Patients are looked after by nurse.
25. The boy killed the spider. The spider was killed by the boy.
26. The police caught the thief. The thief was caught by the police.

34. We do not permit smoking in the kitchen. Smoking in the kitchen isn’t permitted.
35. The cat chased the mouse. The mouse was chased by the cat.
36. Your behavior disgusts me. I am disgusted by your behavior.
37. The cat drank all the milk. All the milk was drunk by the cat.
38. A stone struck me on the head. I was struck by a stone on the forehead.
39. He sings a song. A song is sung by him. (Active verb – sings; passive verb – is sung)
40. They boy killed the spider. The spider was killed by the boy. (Active verb – killed; passive verb – was killed)
41. Help him. Let him be helped. (Imperative sentences in the passive voice begin with let.)
42. Farmers sow maize in the rainy season. Maize is sown in the rainy season. (Active verb – sow; passive verb – is/are sown)
43. Are you writing? Is a letter being written by you? (Active verb – is/are writing; passive verb – is/are being written)
44. The workers were digging a canal. A canal was being dug by the workers. (Active verb – was/were digging; passive verb – was /were being dug)
